چکیده

Combined linear-Viterbi equalizer (CLVE) is a class of receivers employing a linear pre-filter before the Viterbi algorithm (VA) in order to shape the original channel impulse response to some shorter desired impulse response which allows a lower complexity VA. In this paper, we present a new approach for optimizing CLVEs by making use of the Genetic Algorithm to minimize the effective mean squared error (EMSE). Unlike the conventional MSE approach, the EMSE approach takes into account the effect of noise correlations resulting from the pre-filtering process. Simulation results indicate that the proposed EMSE optimization algorithm has an advantage over the conventional MSE algorithms in that better system performance can be achieved.

A New MSE Approach for Combined Linear-Viterbi Equalizers

Combined linear-Viterbi equalization (CLVE) is a technique that employs a linear prelter in conjunction with the Viterbi algorithm (VA) to mitigate the e ects of intersymbol interference. The aim of the linear prelter is to shape the original channel impulse response to some shorter desired impulse response (DIR) in order to reduce the complexity of the VA. In this paper, we present a new MSEba...

Performance and Implementation of Adaptive Partial Response Maximum Likelihood Detection

Motivated by previous comparison work, a configuration for partial response maximum likelihood detection using the Viterbi algorithm (PRML/VA) detectors with adaptive target polynomials is examined. In this configuration, a mean-quared error decision feedback equalization (MSE-DFE) is used to adapt both the forward equalizer and the target channel for the Viterbi detector. The performance of th...

Simultaneous Source Decoding and Blind Equalization of Multipath Fading Channels

In this talk, an introduction will be given to some mathematical tools that have recently been developed for blind equalization of frequency selective fading channels. Standard approaches to the problem are implemented in two steps: First, a channel estimate is obtained, and second, the estimated channel is used to recover the transmitted sequence by means of a zero-forcing or MMSE filter, or u...

Entropy minimization for supervised digital communications channel equalization

This paper investigates the application of error-entropy minimization algorithms to digital communications channel equalization. The pdf of the error between the training sequence and the output of the equalizer is estimated using the Parzen windowing method with a Gaussian kernel, and then, the Renyi’s quadratic entropy is minimized using a gradient descent algorithm. By estimating the Renyis ...

Channel equalization for digital communications was developed by Lucky (1965, 1966), who focused on linear equalizers that were optimized using the peak distortion criterion. The mean-square-error criterion for optimization of the equalizer coefficient...
